Fluxys to manage CO2 pipeline network in Antwerp port

The Flemish government has appointed Fluxys to run a new CO2 pipeline network in the Port of Antwerp, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The network, operated by its subsidiary, will allow companies in the port to transport captured CO2 for storage in empty gas fields beneath the North Sea. Construction of the system began nearly a year ago and it will be open for use by multiple businesses.
Flemish Energy and Climate minister Hans Bonte said the project will help industries reduce emissions. He noted that some sectors, such as steel and cement, cannot fully eliminate CO2 output, making carbon capture and storage an important solution.
The operator is majority-owned by Fluxys, with stakes also held by Port of Antwerp-Bruges and French industrial group Air Liquide.
Fluxys has already been selected to manage similar CO2 infrastructure across Belgium.
Separately, the federal government recently approved plans for a pipeline linking Belgium to Norway, allowing captured CO2 to be transported from the port of Zeebrugge and stored under the seabed.
