Flemish youth news subtitled in Ukrainian

Karrewiet, the youth news programme of the Flemish public youth channel Ketnet, will from now on be subtitled in Ukrainian. This will allow refugee children in Flanders to follow the local news.
Some 10,000 refugee Ukrainian children under 12 are currently living in Belgium. For them, the Flemish public broadcaster VRT offers the possibility to follow the youth news Karrewiet with Ukrainian subtitles, via the app and the website of Ketnet.
"We are doing this because we find it very important that these children can also follow what is happening in our country and in the rest of the world," news anchor Amber Janssens said on Tuesday.
The initiative comes at the request of the management of VRT. For the time being, it will be tested for a month. After an evaluation, a decision will be made as to whether it is interesting for a longer period.
This it is not the first time that the youth news is subtitled in Ukrainian. A month ago, on the national day of action for Ukraine, Karrewiet did the same.
Our country currently registers some 33,000 refugees, almost 13,000 of whom are minors and 10,000 of whom are younger than 12. Many of them go to primary school. There, teachers use Karrewiet's broadcasts to inform children about current affairs and to make certain themes discussable.
