Flemish ultrarunner finishes 366 marathons in one year
Ultrarunner Hilde Dosogne (55) has at the Watersportbaan in Ghent completed the last of 366 consecutive marathons this year on Tuesday afternoon. The woman from Lochristi, East Flanders province, ran a marathon every day this year and already broke the world record in May with her 151st marathon.
More than 600 runners covered the final metres with Dosogne in Ghent. Two-time Olympic medallist Bashir Abdi was also present to support her.
"It's fantastic that there are so many people to support my cause,” said Dosogne, nicknamed Marathon Woman, to newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws after the finish. “But I am happy to be done. Tonight I will definitely drink champagne because it has been tough. I have lost about seven kilograms in the past few months.”
Dosogne already unofficially holds the world record since the end of May - when she ran her 151st marathon in a row. She ran a total of 15,445 kilometres this year, while also working part-time in a chemical company. With her feat, she raised more than 65,000 euros for BIG against breast cancer, a network of academic research groups focusing on the fight against breast cancer.
Dosogne already has her next goal in mind. She wants to take part in the Spartathlon Ultra Race in Greece for the third time next year.
