Flemish startup nxgsat raises 1.2M to bridge the gap between 5G and satellites

Flemish technology startup nxgsat, which specialises in innovative satellite communications, has raised 1.2 million euros in fresh capital. The investment, announced on Tuesday, comes from the Flemish investment company PMV and the imec.istart future fund.
Founded by Alain Rolle and Frederik Simoens, nxgsat aims to make satellite communications more widely accessible using European technology. The funding will support further development and the international rollout of the company’s 5G satellite modem, a field currently dominated by Elon Musk’s Starlink.
According to nxgsat, satellite communication is vital for fast, reliable connectivity in areas where mobile networks are unavailable, such as at sea, in remote regions or during emergencies. However, existing systems have been slow, costly and inflexible, often locking users into a single provider.
“Imagine your smartphone only working on one network and nowhere else. That’s how it is with satellite modems now,” said co-CEO Alain Rolle. Nxgsat seeks to change that with its software-defined 5G satellite modem, which runs on standard hardware rather than expensive proprietary systems. “This is how we bring truly fast, reliable satellite connections to businesses and organisations, anywhere in the world,” Rolle added.
