Flemish publishers reach licensing deal with Google for news articles
Flanders' leading publishers have reached a licensing agreement with Google for their news articles, the American tech giant has announced.
Google has faced increasing pressure from authorities to compensate publishers for the news it distributes on its platform. To address this, the company introduced News Showcase, a platform where Google pays media companies to "curate" high-quality journalism.
Last year, the company signed an agreement with French-language media in Belgium. This new deal brings Flemish publishers DPG Media, Mediahuis and Roularta on board and covers articles from titles including Het Nieuwsblad, De Standaard, Gazet van Antwerpen, Het Laatste Nieuws, De Morgen, Knack and De Tijd.
The agreement follows what the Flemish journalists' union described as "a piece of power play" by Google. Earlier this month, the company conducted a test in eight countries, including Belgium, where it temporarily removed links to news articles for some users. News Media Europe, the publishers' federation, condemned the move, calling it "unacceptable".
