Flemish public broadcaster to stop publishing news in English, French and German

On 1 December, the Flemish public broadcaster VRT will cease publishing news in English, French and German. “The reach is too limited in proportion to the people and resources required for this,” announced the VRT.

VRT currently still provides news in other languages than Dutch via the websites Flandreinfo.be, Flandersnews.be and Flanderninfo.be. These sites will stop publishing on 1 December, the editorial board of VRT NWS announced.

An article on the English-language site refers to “choices that have to be made” due to the cuts imposed on VRT by the Flemish government, in addition to the limited reach. There will be no redundancies. Of the five journalists who produce the articles, two are due to retire next year. The others will be offered alternative roles.
