Government leaders from various European regions gathered in Antwerp on Thursday for a summit on the role regions can play in European policy-making. ‘Leaders Meeting: Fit for the Future’, organised by Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon, was attended by top politicians from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Basque Country, Baden-Württemberg, Catalonia, Hauts-de-France, Lombardy, Lower Saxony, Upper Austria and Saxony. Together, these regions account for a quarter of Europe's gross domestic product and a quarter of trade in goods.
During the summit, the leaders looked for cooperation opportunities in various fields, including digitalisation, competition, employment and SMEs. In a joint statement, they said that the regions are the key to tackling global challenges and that it is vital that the EU commits to a strengthening of the single market during the next legislature.
A report of the summit will be submitted to the various European Union institutions. They will also be presented by the Minister-President to members of the European Commission.
