Flemish minister president: Deepening European market can bring 8 billion euros to economy

Flanders' minister-president says that a well-functioning European Single Market could generate more than 8 billion euros for the region each year. Matthias Diependaele made the statement in response to a question from fellow N-VA MP Inge Brocken.
The International Monetary Fund estimates that the remaining barriers within the Single Market equate to tariffs of up to 50 per cent on goods and 110 per cent on services. The services sector, which accounts for 75 per cent of the EU’s GDP, continues to face significant obstacles, including complex national licensing requirements and certification procedures.
European studies suggest that these barriers could reduce the potential economic benefits by up to 30 per cent. For Flanders, where an increasing number of companies operate in logistics, digital services and industry, these constraints represent a structural impediment.
"Not new slogans or structures, but fewer rules, clear agreements and respect for Flemish interests"
The new trade agreement between the EU and the United States is due to come into effect on 1 August. While acknowledging the importance of international cooperation, Brocken stresses that Flanders primarily needs a functioning internal market.
“A properly functioning European market would bring billions to Flanders without the need for new taxes or treaties,” she said, adding: “Not new slogans or structures, but fewer rules, clear agreements and respect for Flemish interests.”
The European Commission recently published its Single Market Strategy, a roadmap aimed at reinforcing the internal market.
"As Flanders, we have used our influence at both the Belgian and European levels to help shape policy," said Diependaele. "This includes contributing to the Commission’s consultation process, as well as advocating our positions within EU Council working groups and through bilateral discussions with other member states."
