Flemish government says various renovations are exempted from permits

The Flemish government has decided to exempt a range of minor renovation works from requiring environmental permits. Flemish minister of the environment Jo Brouns announced on Friday.
The exemptions apply to façade renovations without extensions, interior works that do not affect structural stability, plug-in solar panel installations, small constructions on agricultural land, wadis, small water purification systems and small-scale fermentation plants.
In addition, certain activities that previously required notification, but not a permit, will no longer need to be reported.
Municipalities will face new limits on the additional permits they can impose. Exceptions will only be allowed for activities involving the felling of trees, the removal of woody vegetation with heritage value, or work on protected or valuable heritage sites.
The decision will now go to the advisory councils for review. Brouns hopes to finalise the changes by the end of the year.
