Flemish government finalises plans for North-South connection in Limburg

The Flemish government has officially adopted the plans for the North-South connection in Limburg at the council of ministers. This connection should significantly improve traffic flow between the Belgian city of Hasselt and the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The works are scheduled to start in 2027 at the earliest.
The development of the important North-South connection is another step closer, following the positive advice from the European Commission in May. Shortly afterwards, the Flemish government sought advice from the Council of State and already approved the plans in principle. After receiving positive advice, the Flemish government has now finalised the plan in the council of ministers.
“The North-South connection is one of the crucial missing links in our road network"
The final approval is an important step, as it means that the start of the works can now be made concrete. The Flemish government speaks of “a historic moment”.
“This decision by the Flemish government increases confidence and clarity about the project,” explained Flemish minister for mobility and public works Annick De Ridder to VRT NWS. “The North-South connection is one of the crucial missing links in our road network. A smooth and safe connection between Hasselt and North Limburg, and by extension to the Eindhoven region, is absolutely necessary.”
The selection procedure for the contractors who will carry out the project from 2027 onwards will start this autumn.
