Flemish government backs Euroglas plant with 2m euros in strategic support

The Flemish government is granting 2 million euros in "strategic transformation support" to Euroglas Base Glass. Flemish minister president Matthias Diependaele announced the decision on Sunday.
Euroglas Base Glass is investing 276 million euros in a new flat-glass plant at Kristalpark III in Lommel, Limburg. The facility will produce high-quality flat glass used in insulation glass, solar panels, facade glazing, laminated safety and fire-resistant glass, and bathroom applications.
The Flemish government is granting 2 million euros to support the plant, which is "an essential strategic contribution to our economic resilience", according to Diependaele.
"Everywhere you look through glass, work or live behind it, or are protected by it, you’ll find this sustainable raw material," he said. "Today, that glass is barely made in Western Europe and that makes us vulnerable. With this new and sustainable innovation plant, we’re bringing strategic capacity to Flanders."
Energy-efficient innovation
According to the Flemish government, the Lommel site will become one of Europe’s most energy-efficient flat-glass production lines, equipped with heat-recovery systems, a nearly closed water circuit and an energy-efficient furnace. Its proximity to raw materials and major transport routes should further reduce environmental impact.
Euroglas Base Glass will also invest in R&D, including advanced nanocoatings and AI-driven process optimisation, in collaboration with KU Leuven and UHasselt. "This will make the site not only a production site, but also an innovation engine for new applications. This is how we bring long-term expertise and competitiveness to Flanders," Diependaele added.
The investment is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs: 205 at the new plant and 868 at suppliers.
