Flemish employment rate nears 80 percent
Flanders is approaching its target of an employment rate of 80 percent by 2030. In the last quarter of 2022, 77.2 percent of 20- to 64-year-olds were working. This is according to figures from the Belgian statistical office Statbel.
Minister of Work Pierre-Yves Dermagne announced this weekend that Belgium's employment rate has risen to 72.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022. This puts the government's goal of an 80 percent employment rate by 2030 within reach.
More detailed figures from Statbel show that in Flanders, the employment rate rose to 77.2 percent from 76.8 percent in the third quarter. Among men, the employment rate is as high as 80.5 percent, and 74 percent among women.
In Wallonia and Brussels, there was a drop in the unemployment rate in the last quarter. In Brussels, there was a drop from 65.8 to 65.1 percent. Just under six in 10 women between the ages of 20 and 64, for example, are employed there. In Wallonia, the employment rate fell slightly to 65.8 percent in the fourth quarter from 65.9 percent in the third quarter.
