Flemish arthouse cinemas organise Spanish film festival
Independent cinemas in Ghent, Kortrijk, Antwerp and Mechelen are joining forces for cineMÁS, a festival of Spanish-language cinema. From 19 to 25 April, the arthouse cinemas will showcase films from Spain and Latin America.
Sphinx cinema in Ghent, arts centre BUDA in Kortrijk, Cinema Cartoon's in Antwerp and Cinema Lumière in Mechelen will put on 37 screenings of 11 feature films.
"With a film selection that reflects on a culture of magical realism as well as activism, we see the dreams and nightmares of Spanish-speaking countries and their inhabitants," a Sphinx spokesperson said. "And where every nightmare tries to incorporate a piece of reality, so every dream remains a bit of fiction."
Cince lobitos (Lullaby) will open the festival. The film won three Goyas, Spain's most important film awards, in February. As bestas (The Beasts) was the big winner at the awards, with nine Goyas, including for best film, director, original screenplay, actor and male supporting actor. It will be shown in Ghent and Kortrijk. Modelo 77 (Prison 77), which won five Goyas, will be shown in Ghent and Antwerp.
Argentina, 1985 is on the programme at all four locations. Like the Belgian film Close, it was beaten to the Oscar for best international film by the German war drama Im Westen nichts neues (All Quiet on the Western Front). CineMÁS will also screen the 1955 classic Muerte de un ciclista (Death of a Cyclist) by Juan Antonio Bardem, the uncle of actor Javier Bardem.
