Flanders to organise autumn vaccination campaign against Covid-19
As in previous years, Flanders will organise a vaccination campaign against Covid-19 this autumn. It will be part of the Flemish government's annual vaccination programme, Public Health minister Hilde Crevits announced.
The campaign will focus on vulnerable people and those in residential care centres. It will be carried out by general practitioners, pharmacists and home nurses. The aim is to use the latest vaccine, which is currently under development.
"This is how we protect children and adults against the most serious consequences of various diseases," says Crevits. "By 2030, we want to protect the population even better with vaccinations."
Last year, around 1.5 million doses were administered. A budget of 1.55 million euros has been earmarked for the campaign.
Two-in-one vaccine
It may be the last time a separate campaign is organised for vaccination against Covid-19. The pharmaceutical company Moderna has announced that its vaccine, which protects against both influenza and Covid-19, offers better protection than two separate injections.
"Combined vaccines have the potential to reduce the burden of respiratory viruses on the healthcare system,"said Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel. "It also provides easier options for people who want to be vaccinated, which should increase participation and thus protection rates."
Moderna is currently the only pharmaceutical company with positive results on a combination vaccine. The company hopes to launch the vaccine this year or in 2025, depending on regulatory approval.
