Flanders saves 1m euros on amateur arts

The nine organisations in Flanders that promote amateur arts will have to make do with 13.5 per cent less funding next year. They had hoped for more resources, but will have to give up one million euros, De Standaard reported on Saturday.
In the Flemish budget exercise in September last year, the sector was included with the other support centres, each of which will have to give up 3 per cent funding between 2026 and 2030. This concerns nine amateur arts organisations, each supporting a different discipline. Among them are Creatief Schrijven (literature), Vibe (pop and rock), Vlamo (instrumental music), Kunstwerkt (visual arts), Breedbeeld (film and photography) and Opendoek (theatre).
The organisations were recently informed that the budgetary framework is more negative than expected. They will face an additional 10.5 per cent cut. For the subsidy round that is currently taking place, they had actually hoped for an increase of 2 million euros: one euro for each of the two million amateur artists in Flanders.
The office of Flemish minister of culture Caroline Gennez confirms the figures and says that the savings follow the logic of the budget round.
