Flanders renews environmental permit for Ineos ethane cracker
Flanders has issued a renewed environmental permit for Ineos’ planned ethane cracker in the port of Antwerp, Environment minister Zuhal Demir has confirmed.
Project One was granted a conditional environmental permit on 7 January. However, to take into account the region’s new decree on nitrogen emissions – which came into force on 23 February – the previous decision was withdrawn.
Among other conditions, the British chemical company is still required to make the plant climate-neutral within 10 years of the start of operation, provided the techniques and infrastructure are available at that time. Strict emission and discharge standards must also be respected during the operation phase.
“This permit is about much more than the applicant,” Demir said in a press release. “This is about Flemish contractors and subcontractors, Flemish jobs and Flemish prosperity. Because this is also about maintaining the balance with the environment, it is extremely important that the applicant strictly complies with the permit conditions. This must therefore be monitored, including by the next minister.”
