Flanders bids to host European AI innovation hub in Zellik

Flanders has officially submitted its candidacy to host a new European AI factory in Zellik. The region wants to become a central hub for artificial intelligence innovation. The site would provide businesses, start-ups, and research institutions with access to advanced computing power and large datasets.
The proposed AI centre is, according to De Tijd, part of Belgium’s joint application supported by both regional and federal governments under the EU’s EuroHPC initiative. The 80 million euro project would be split between two sites, in Zellik (Flemish Brabant) and Charleroi (Wallonia). Half of the funding is expected from the EU.
Flemish minister-president Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) emphasised the project’s role in ensuring “strategic independence” and boosting competitiveness through practical AI applications such as personalised medicine, smart energy, secure manufacturing, and efficient food production.
“The goal is to anchor AI expertise in Flanders and ensure we remain competitive with global players like the US and China”
The Leuven-based research institute imec will lead the project in collaboration with universities and the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB). They will aim to create a robust ecosystem linking research and industry.
“The goal is to anchor AI expertise in Flanders and ensure we remain competitive with global players like the US and China”, Diependaele said. A final decision on the EU’s AI Factory locations is expected later this year.
