The first two trucks of the Belgian postal company Bpost with relief goods for Ukraine left the sorting centre in Jemelle in the province of Namur on Monday afternoon. The trucks are loaded with pallets of food products for people, animal feed and care products (shampoo, sanitary towels, pampers, etc.).
Two pairs of drivers are in charge of the journey of a total of 3,400 kilometres there and back. The exact final destination will remain a secret for security reasons. The goods will be handed over to the Ukrainian Post Office, which is responsible for further distribution. The drivers are expected back in Belgium on Thursday.
180 drivers have applied to drive to Ukraine. A selection was made based on experience, character and the ability to control their emotions. "We don't know what can happen there," spokeswoman Laura Cerrada Crespo said.
Dirk Tirez, CEO of Bpost, who was present at the departure of the first two trucks, said he was "proud and impressed by the commitment of Bpost employees". He added that "service to the population and citizens is part of the DNA of the company".
Until 15 April, people can donate and drop off relief goods for Ukraine at Bpost's 657 post offices.
