Farmers block bridge in Ghent, preventing shipping at North Sea Port

Farmers began blocking the Zelzate bridge over the Ghent Terneuzen canal at around 7.50 on Thursday morning. About 10 tractors have driven onto the bridge, preventing it from raising to let ships pass. "Shipping in the Ghent part of the port is down," North Sea Port spokesperson Johan Bresseleers said.

About a dozen vessels pass the bridge daily to unload and load goods. These can no longer dock at port companies or leave towards the Westerschelde. It appears that farmers will not allow cargo traffic to cross the bridge, but passenger traffic is still possible.

The farmers also headed towards the Eurosilo roundabout at 8.10, one of the largest roundabouts in Flanders that serves as an important axis for freight traffic and for people working at the port companies.
