Exit poll: D66 set to become largest party in the Netherlands

The left-leaning D66 is projected to become the largest party in the Netherlands, winning 27 seats, according to the first exit poll by polling firm Ipsos I&O. The far-right PVV of Geert Wilders follows with 25 seats.
If confirmed, the result would represent a remarkable rise for D66 and its leader, Rob Jetten, who won just nine seats in the 2023 election. Ipsos I&O did caution that the exit poll carries a margin of error of up to two seats, meaning D66’s lead is not yet certain.
According to the exit poll, the conservative VVD comes third with 23 seats, followed by the left-wing GroenLinks-PvdA alliance with 20 seats and the Christian democratic CDA with 19 seats.
The snap election was triggered after the coalition of PVV, VVD, BBB and NSC fell apart earlier this year over disagreements on asylum policy. The exit poll indicates BBB will lose three of its seven seats, while NSC is projected to lose all 20 of the seats it won in 2023.
