Evenepoel wins queen stage in Tour of Britain, closes on overall lead

On Saturday, Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) claimed victory in the queen stage of the Tour of Britain, outsprinting his rivals on the steep finish at the top of The Tumble in Wales.
Thomas Gloag (Visma–Lease a Bike) and Oscar Onley (Picnic PostNL) took second and third place respectively. Romain Grégoire of France (Groupama–FDJ) retained the overall lead, but Evenepoel is now just two seconds behind with one stage remaining.

The 133-kilometre stage featured five categorised climbs, including two ascents of The Tumble (5.5 km at 7.3 per cent). After the early breakaways were caught, the decisive battle took place on the final climb. There, Evenepoel responded to attacks before launching a powerful uphill sprint, guided by his teammate Ilan Van Wilder.
This was the Belgian’s sixth win of the season and his first since withdrawing from the Tour de France. The 25-year-old, who has just confirmed a transfer to Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, is staging a comeback in Britain and is still in with a chance of winning overall in Sunday's finale in Cardiff.
