European ministers urge Venice Biennale to exclude Russia

Several European culture ministers have called on the organisers of the Venice Biennale to ban Russia from the next edition of the major art festival. Among them is Flemish Culture minister Caroline Gennez, who signed an open letter with ministers from 22 countries. The initiative was launched by Latvia.
The ministers say Russia should not be allowed to take part while it continues its war in Ukraine. According to Gennez, allowing Russia to participate would send the wrong signal while international law and human rights are being violated.
The 61st edition of the Biennale is due to run from 9 May to 22 November in Venice. Russia was previously banned from the festival in 2022 and 2024 after the invasion of Ukraine.
The European Commission has also criticised the decision to allow Russia back. It said it is considering measures such as suspending financial support for the event if the organisers keep the decision.
The debate reflects wider tensions over Russia’s return to international events. Russia is currently taking part in the Winter Paralympics in Italy for the first time in years, which has prompted protests and boycotts from several countries led by Ukraine.
