European leaders welcome US-Iran peace deal

European leaders have welcomed the framework agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a major opportunity to bring stability back to the Middle East.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the deal as a “potential breakthrough” that could create space for further talks on Iran’s nuclear programme and other key issues. She said the European Union is ready to play an active role in the next phase of negotiations.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen also welcomed the agreement and urged all sides to implement it quickly. She said the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was essential for regional stability and the global economy. Von der Leyen added that the deal should lead to broader talks on peace and security in the Middle East and help end Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programmes.

European Council president Antonio Costa praised the diplomatic efforts that made the agreement possible. He said weapons must now “fall silent” and that remaining disputes should be settled peacefully and in line with international law.

German chancellor Friedrich Merz called the agreement a diplomatic breakthrough that could strengthen the global economy and improve security in the Middle East. Belgium’s foreign minister, Maxime Prevot, said that the deal must mark a new era for the region and for Iran: “An era without nuclear programme and with authorities hearing the legitimate democratic aspirations of their citizens.”

French president Emmanuel Macron said the agreement could open the door to a wider peace process in the region. He also stressed the need for a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon and said France was ready to support further negotiations alongside its partners.
