EU reaches deal with Israel to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip

The European Union has reached an agreement with Israel to expand humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip. The deal was announced by Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, on X.
According to Kallas, the agreement constitutes “a significant step” that should improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. “We count on Israel to implement every measure agreed,” she said.
The deal should lead to a “substantial increase” of daily trucks for food and non-food items entering Gaza, the opening of several other crossing points in both the northern and southern areas and the reopening of the Jordanian and Egyptian aid routes.
It should also enable the distribution of food supplies through bakeries and public kitchens throughout the Gaza Strip and the resumption of fuel deliveries for use by humanitarian facilities. Aid workers should receive protection and vital infrastructure, such as a water desalination facility, should be repaired.
“These measures are or will be implemented in the coming days, with the common understanding that aid at scale must be delivered directly to the population and that measures will continue to be taken to ensure that there is no aid diversion to Hamas,” Kallas said.
“The EU stands ready to coordinate with all relevant humanitarian stakeholders, UN agencies and NGOs on the ground, to ensure swift implementation of those urgent steps.”
Kallas added that the EU was again calling for “an immediate ceasefire and the release of all remaining hostages”. She also underlined that the EU supports the “current efforts of Egypt, Qatar and the United States of America as mediators”.
