EU leaders rejoice as Maia Sandu secures victory in Moldova

Moldova’s pro-European president Maia Sandu has secured her re-election, winning 55.4% of the vote in a runoff against pro-Russian candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo. Her victory has sparked joyous celebrations and strong support from European leaders, who view it as a significant step for the country toward further integration with the European Union.

In her victory speech, Sandu expressed gratitude to her supporters both at home and abroad. “Moldova, today you are victorious. Together, we’ve shown the strength of our unity, democracy, and commitment to a dignified future. Thank you, dear Moldovans, at home and abroad. Walk with pride - you are freedom, hope, and resilience. I am proud to serve you all”, she said.

The election followed a pivotal referendum in October, in which Moldovans supported enshrining the pursuit of EU membership in the constitution. This recent electoral success builds on the momentum for Moldova to align more closely with Europe, despite persistent attempts by Russia to undermine its democratic processes.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Sandu on X, calling for a “united Europe” and highlighting the Moldovan people’s choice for economic growth and social stability. He also underscored Ukraine’s readiness to strengthen partnerships with Moldova to enhance cooperation in the face of regional challenges.

European leaders, including German chancellor Olaf Scholz and French president Emmanuel Macron, expressed their satisfaction with the election outcome. “Democracy has triumphed against all the interference and all the manoeuvres. France will continue to stand by Moldova on its European path”, Macron said.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, praised Sandu’s strength in overcoming challenges during the election and said she looked forward to continuing collaboration for a European future.

With Moldova’s recent referendum affirming the pursuit of EU membership, Sandu’s victory is a clear mandate for the country’s aspirations: steering away from Russian pressures and siding more with European partners.
