EU: Israel not respecting agreement to increase aid to Gaza

Israel is failing to fully comply with its agreement to increase the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, the EU’s diplomatic service announced on Thursday.
A document from the European External Action Service (EEAS), sent to EU member states, states that the number of aid trucks entering the war-torn coastal enclave remains “below the agreed levels” set in mid-July. Israel only committed to increasing aid after sustained pressure from several EU countries.
According to the UN and humanitarian organisations, Israel continues to obstruct aid operations. “There is a discrepancy between the figures provided by the UN and humanitarian organisations and those reported by Israel,” the document says.
Some progress has been made: fuel deliveries have resumed after a 130-day halt, and aid routes through Egypt, Jordan and the Zikim crossing in northern Gaza have reopened. Certain infrastructure has also been restored.
Nonetheless, the EEAS warns that the threat of famine still looms over Gaza’s two million residents.
