The award ceremony was held in Brussels on Tuesday evening.

The European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Awards recognise cities, municipalities and regions that stand out for their policies on inclusion, diversity and the fight against discrimination.

Leuven was honoured for its efforts to create equal opportunities for all residents, regardless of their origin, gender, age, religion, disability or sexual orientation. Gold went to Józsefváros, a district of the Hungarian capital Budapest, while the Dutch city of Leiden claimed bronze.

The jury singled out initiatives including "Leuven without Racism" and an action plan against discrimination in housing, employment and education. The city also draws praise for its focus on accurate representation, multilingualism and accessibility, and for its active support of diverse communities, including older people and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Leuven was also a finalist in a separate category dedicated to inclusive labour markets, thanks to its so-called Leuven Learning Ecosystem, which lets its citzens learn in an accessible way through creative spaces and informal learning environments.

A "crowning achievement" for the city

Diversity and Equal Opportunities alderwoman Lotte Ramakers welcomed the result as a recognition of the city's sustained commitment. "It is a crowning achievement for the efforts of residents, organisations and city staff who contribute daily to a city where everyone feels welcome," she said.

The city council stressed that the award is a milestone rather than a finishing line. Leuven intends to maintain its commitment to an inclusive society and hopes the recognition will serve as an example for other cities and municipalities across Europe.

#FlandersNewsService | © BELGA PHOTO JONAS ROOSENS

Related news
<div id=\"bookmark-b6b8337b-522d-451f-a313-e23662b43777\"\n class=\"release-content-bookmark release-content-bookmark--horizontal\">\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__thumbnail\"\n href=\"https://www.belganewsagency.eu/leuven-wins-bid-for-european-capital-of-culture-in-2030\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" style=\"background-image: url(https://prezly.imgix.net/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.uc.assets.prezly.com%2F3cc981bb-a5a7-47b3-a55f-962d882ea399%2F-%2Fpreview%2F600x600%2F?ar=1%3A1&fit=crop&s=80a8dbb544e36a3966d36ac1cc03882a)\"\n >\n \n
\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__title\"\n href=\"https://www.belganewsagency.eu/leuven-wins-bid-for-european-capital-of-culture-in-2030\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"bookmark\"\n data-track=\"Story WebBookmark Click\"\n data-placement=\"content\"\n data-id=\"b6b8337b-522d-451f-a313-e23662b43777\"\n >\n Leuven wins bid for European Capital of Culture in 2030 \n \n
\n Leuven will represent Belgium as European Capital of Culture in 2030.
