Employers and VDAB organise job day for Van Hool employees
Employers' organisations Voka and Agoria and employment agency VDAB are organising a job fair in Putte on 28 May specifically for employees of bus manufacturer Van Hool, which is facing bankruptcy. By waiting until May, the initiators say they are giving a potential buyer time to ensure a fresh start and clarity about the number of jobs that could be saved.
The organisers say they want to offer Van Hool employees a perspective if they are facing unemployment. "We are facing the biggest restructuring in six years," says Tom Laveren, managing director of Voka Mechelen-Kempen. "So we are taking action. There is a lot of talent and craftsmanship at Van Hool. If there is a complete restart, that would be great. If there is a partial restart or another scenario: we will be ready together."
Voka, Agoria and VDAB believe that there will be a great demand for the knowledge available at Van Hool. "Our manufacturing industry has a great need for this talent," says Jolyce Demely, director of Agoria Flanders. "We are also ready for any retraining or further training we can offer, including through the sector's career fund."
The VDAB will also set up an employment cell, the main task of which will be to inform the employees concerned and refer them to outplacement counselling. "In such counselling, there is room to process the blow, and the focus is on activation and, if necessary, reorientation," says Bjorn Cuyt, director of VDAB Antwerp province. "The job fair fits perfectly into this process. In addition to the vacancies, attention will also be paid to the training courses offered by VDAB and its partners for those who want to reorient themselves or update their knowledge and skills".
