Elise Mertens battles past Veronika Kudermetova in opening round of US Open

Belgium's Elise Mertens beat Veronika Kudermetova in three sets in the first round of the US Open. She will face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the next round.

Mertens, currently ranked 35 in the world, lost the first set but bounced back and beat her former doubles partner Kudermetova in three sets: 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The match lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes.

Mertens is playing in the US Open for the ninth time. Her best result was a quarter-final appearance in 2019 and 2020. She is also playing doubles, where she is ranked fourth in the world, with Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh.
