Elections 2024: Philippe Close to stay on as Brussels mayor with new coalition

Following Sunday’s municipal elections, socialist Philippe Close has secured another term as mayor of Brussels after striking a coalition agreement on Monday morning. His party, PS-Vooruit, will govern alongside MR+ and Les Engagés-CD&V, giving the new coalition a solid majority in the city council with 31 out of 49 seats.
Close’s party maintained its position in the City of Brussels with 28.1 per cent of the vote, securing 16 seats, a slight drop from the previous election. MR+ saw significant gains, rising by 7.3 points to 21.2 per cent, earning 12 seats. The three seats won by Les Engagés-CD&V further strengthened the coalition’s grip on the council.
The new coalition replaces the previous one, which included PS, Ecolo-Groen and Défi. Défi has lost all its seats, while Ecolo-Groen has been reduced to six seats. Close’s continuation as mayor ensures stability for the capital after a competitive election that saw shifting political alliances.
