Dutch man and Belgian woman arrested over explosions in Kerkrade

A 24-year-old Belgian woman and a 40-year-old Dutch man were arrested on Tuesday as part of an investigation into several explosions in the Dutch town of Kerkrade in 2024.
Last year, three explosions took place near a house in Kerkrade, a town close to the Belgian and German borders. Two people were arrested on Tuesday morning in Riemst by a Dutch arrest team on suspicion of involvement in two of the three explosions.
Investigators found large quantities of illegal fireworks, several firearms, ammunition and parts of firearms
Searches were carried out in the Belgian town of Riemst and the Dutch city of Maastricht. During those searches, investigators found large quantities of illegal fireworks, several firearms, ammunition and parts of firearms.
Motives unclear
The explosions took place on 13 June, 16 November and 24 December 2024 in the late evening at a house in the Grachterstraat in Kerkrade. The most recent explosion also damaged a car.
It is unclear why the explosions took place and why this particular residence was targeted. The Dutch-Limburg public prosecutor's office has asked Belgium to extradite the male suspect, who is in custody in Belgium.

The case is under criminal investigation in the Netherlands. At the time of the explosions, extensive searches were carried out in the area, witnesses were interviewed and CCTV footage was secured. Anyone with information about the explosions is asked to contact the police.
