Digital identity app itsme acquires Dutch identification service iDIN

The Belgian digital identity app itsme is acquiring the Dutch identification service iDIN, the company announced on Wednesday. The move marks a significant step in itsme’s international expansion, with the Netherlands set to become the first country outside Belgium where the app will substantially roll out its services.
As part of the acquisition, iDIN is expected to be gradually incorporated into itsme. Once the transition is complete, Dutch citizens will be able to use itsme to identify themselves online, log in securely, and verify their age. For the time being, nothing will change for existing iDIN users.
iDIN is an initiative of Currence, a partnership of major Dutch banks. The move from iDIN to itsme is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2028. The itsme app is already available in the Netherlands and can be installed using a Dutch identity document.
European standard
The acquisition aligns with itsme’s ambition to become the European standard for secure digital identification. Following a recent expansion that made the app available in 30 countries, the Netherlands represents its first major market beyond Belgium.
Itsme is widely used in its home market, with more than 80 per cent of Belgian adults using the app for digital identification. Users carry out over 1 million actions per day, and the platform collaborates with more than 1,200 companies.
Itsme was launched in 2017 by Belgian banks KBC, ING, Belfius and BNP Paribas Fortis, with telecom operators Telenet, Proximus and Orange. The Belgian government investment fund FPIM has also been a shareholder since 2021.
