DIGI Belgium’s subscriber growth slows sharply

Romanian telecom group DIGI has reported a marked slowdown in customer growth for its Belgian arm, adding just 9,000 mobile subscribers in the second quarter to reach around 62,000 by the end of June.
The figures cover only mobile customers, with no data yet provided on the fixed network rollout. Despite aggressive pricing (5 euros per month for 15 GB and a 3 euro entry plan launched in June) the operator has failed to trigger a mass influx, according to rival estimates.
DIGI’s launch has been marred by customer complaints, management changes and regulatory setbacks. In May, Federal Telecom minister Vanessa Matz summoned the company over service issues, and in June a Brussels court fined it for breaching safety and permit rules.
Last month, DIGI told shareholders it had restructured its Belgian venture with partner Citymesh, which retains 49 per cent ownership compared with DIGI’s 51 per cent.
