Demonstrators march through Brussels in solidarity with Iranian people

More than 1,500 people gathered on Sunday afternoon in central Brussels at the initiative of the Iranian diaspora in Belgium and Europe. The demonstration, organised before the US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Saturday, was intended to show solidarity with the Iranian people following violent crackdowns against citizens that have left thousands of people dead.
Around 1,600 people attended, according to police, including MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez and MPs Darya Safai of N-VA and Lydia Mutyebele of PS.
Several Iranian activists and Belgian political representatives addressed the crowd at Place de Brouckère, after which demonstrators marched along the Petite Ceinture via Botanique towards Place de l’Albertine.
Belgian-Iranians and representatives of the Iranian diaspora wanted to use the demonstration to express their support for their compatriots. Many Israeli and American flags were also on show, following the US-Israeli bombings on Saturday morning, which killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“I’m incredibly happy to see so many people here all together,” said Parnian Robatsarpooshi, one of those present.
“We also knew only at the last minute that we have something to celebrate, as since yesterday we know that our country’s biggest killer was killed yesterday. We sincerely hope this will also be the end of the regime.”
