Democrats Abroad protest against Trump at US embassy in Brussels

Around a hundred members and supporters of Democrats Abroad in Belgium have on Saturday afternoon protested at the US embassy in Belgium. Similar protests are taking place in 1,500 cities in the US and abroad, on the same day that US president Donald Trump is holding a military parade in honour of the 250th anniversary of the US Army. It is also Trump's 79th birthday.
Democrats Abroad, the Democratic Party organisation for Americans living outside the US, with the protest criticised the “undemocratic, demagogic and, in short, authoritarian policies” of the Trump II administration.
They stated that they were amongst others concerned about “the deportation of citizens, whether they have a green card or not, without due process to a prison in El Salvador, the illegal suppression of peaceful protests in Los Angeles by deploying the army, the attacks on the rule of law and the judicial system, and the curtailment of press freedom”.
“We want today to be a day of resistance, worldwide,” said Robin De Wauters of Democrats Abroad in Belgium. According to him, with this parade, Trump is following the example of countries such as Russia and North Korea.

The protest, attended by about a hundred people, aimed to send a signal from Brussels that president Trump cannot simply do as he pleases without showing respect for the American people. “We are here to support Americans abroad,” said De Wauters. “We feel the impact of Trump's policies here too.”
The protesters fear that if the American civilian population does not take a stand, the United States is in danger of sliding into dictatorship.
