DEME wins first major offshore wind contract in Japan

Belgian maritime contractor DEME has won its first major offshore wind contract in Japan, the company announced on Friday.
The project, called Oga-Katagami-Akita, will be built off the coast of Katagami in the Sea of Japan. It will include 21 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 megawatts.
The contract was awarded to Japan Offshore Marine, a joint venture between DEME and Japanese contractor Penta-Ocean. The companies will handle the engineering work and use the installation vessel Sea Challenger for the project.
DEME said its share of the contract is worth up to €50 million. The installation works are expected to begin in the second half of 2027.
The deal is an important step for DEME in Japan, which the company sees as a growing market for offshore wind energy. Japan currently has limited offshore wind capacity but aims to expand strongly by 2030.
