Delhaize doubles e-commerce capacity with new distribution centre near Brussels

Delhaize has opened a new e-commerce distribution centre in Forest, on the outskirts of Brussels, doubling its capacity to 50,000 online grocery orders per week. The €53 million investment, made in partnership with the logistics real estate firm Montea, will support Delhaize’s efforts to become the market leader in Belgium for in-store order collection, a position currently held by Colruyt.
Although Delhaize already dominates the home delivery market, this expansion reinforces its e-commerce infrastructure and complements its existing facilities in Puurs, Ghent and Liège. The new site is strategically located to serve customers in the Brussels periphery more efficiently, reducing delivery distances and improving speed.

According to Delhaize, the new capacity was urgently needed, as the retailer had previously had to reject online orders due to system overload. Once fully operational, the Forest centre will create up to 400 jobs. These staff will not be hired directly by Delhaize, but by an external partner. The company clarified that this is standard practice in the sector.
Jennifer Nemry, Delhaize’s vice president of e-commerce, noted that the company’s online operations have seen double-digit annual growth since the start of the pandemic. The recent decision to offer free in-store grocery collection has already boosted volumes by 20 per cent in just one month.
