De Lijn strike disrupts public transport across Flanders
Public transport across Flanders was significantly disrupted due to a strike by De Lijn workers on Monday, following Sunday's Car-Free Day. The walkout, driven by staff frustration over unilateral decisions regarding shift schedules, reduced bus and tram services to just 45 per cent of their usual capacity.
By taking part in the strike, staff aimed to show dissatisfaction with what they see as one-sided communication from management regarding the annual planning and shift changes.
The strike comes directly after Car-Free Sunday, a day aimed at promoting public transport and reducing car use.
De Lijn put an alternative schedule in place but the disruption was felt across all provinces. In Antwerp, only 48 per cent of buses and trams ran, while East Flanders saw 38 per cent, Flemish Brabant 52 per cent, Limburg 54 per cent and West Flanders just 36 per cent of services operating.
In cities, the situation was worse. Only 43 per cent of services operated in Antwerp and 21 per cent in Ghent, while the coastal tram ran at only 28 per cent capacity.
