Davos: Belgium's King and PM meet Bill Gates and Ukraine's president
Bill Gates was a guest at Belgium House in Davos on Tuesday evening at the invitation of prime minister Alexander De Croo. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were also present. Earlier in the day, the Belgian delegation met Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
During the event at the World Economic Forum, Gates took part in a panel discussion on clean technology with De Croo and the CEOs of Belgian companies DEME, Fluxys and Syensqo, formerly Solvay. The Microsoft founder expressed his support for combining renewable energy and nuclear power.
Belgium, Gates said, "wants to be a leader" in the transition to carbon-free energy. The country is hosting an international summit in March on the role of nuclear power in phasing out fossil fuels.
On Tuesday afternoon, the King and prime minister met Zelensky to discuss issues including European financial support for Ukraine. Given the frozen Russian assets in the Belgian-based clearing house Euroclear, Belgium plays an important role in this. European arms supplies and Zelensky's peace plan were also on the agenda.
Belgium House is a new private initiative by major companies to highlights the Belgian economy during the annual World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort.
