David Goffin exits US Open after defeat to Tomas Machac
Belgian tennis player David Goffin has bowed out of the US Open following a disappointing loss to the Czech Tomas Machac. Elise Mertens is now the only Belgian remaining in the competition.
David Goffin (ATP 78) failed to qualify for the round of 16 of the US Open in New York on Saturday. Despite his earlier wins against Alejandro Tabilo (ATP 21) and Adrian Mannarino (ATP 42), he couldn’t get past Czech Tomas Machac (ATP 39) in the third round.
The 23-year-old Machac brushed Goffin aside in three short sets: 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2. The match lasted barely an hour and 34 minutes.
With Goffin’s departure, Elise Mertens is now the only Belgian player remaining in the competition. She defeated American Madison Keys earlier on Saturday in her third round match. Mertens will take on Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 2), her former doubles partner, in the round of 16.
