David Goffin and Zizou Bergs advance to second round US Open
David Goffin and Zizou Bergs have battled their way past Alejandro Tabilo and Pavel Kotov in the opening round of the US Open. Four Belgians have now made it into the second round of the grand slam tournament.
The Belgians had a good start at the fourth and last grand slam tournament of the year. After Elise Mertens and Greet Minnen, David Goffin and Zizou Bergs have now also qualified for the second round at the US Open.
Bergs (ATP 80) beat Russian Pavel Kotov (ATP 60) in the first round in New York in five sets: 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6 and 7-6(10/7). The match lasted 4 hours and 23 minutes. Earlier, David Goffin (ATP 78) qualified for the second round after a handsome victory in three sets (7-6 (9/7), 6-1 and 7-5) against Chile's Alejandro Tabilo (ATP 21). The Belgians will face Flavio Cobolli (ATP 31) and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (ATP 42) respectively in the next round.
Goffin, who is in top form, hopes to shine again at the US Open. He already made it into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows four times before (2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020). For Zizou Bergs, it is the first time in the tournament's main draw without having to finish qualifiers.
