David Goffin advances to third round at Wimbledon
Belgium's David Goffin qualified for the third round of Wimbledon, the third grand slam tournament of the year. Goffin won his second-round match at the London grass tournament against Chilean qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera on Thursday.
Goffin beat Barrios Vera in four sets, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, after 3 hours and 20 minutes. In his first-round duel on Monday, the 32-year-old from Liège beat Hungarian "lucky loser" Fabian Marozsan, also in four sets. After his first match, rain delays meant he had to wait until Thursday before he could return to action.
Russia's seventh-ranked Andrey Rublev awaits in the next round. In the second round, Rublev beat compatriot Aslan Karatsev in four sets. Rublev reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2021, his best result to date at the All England Club.
Goffin is in the main draw at Wimbledon thanks to a wildcard. He is competing at Wimbledon for the ninth time. He reached the quarter-finals twice, in 2019 and 2022.
