Damme tests smoother cobbles to help cyclists

The historic town of Damme in West Flanders is starting an experiment to make cycling on cobbled streets more comfortable.
Flemish Heritage minister Ben Weyts and mayor Joachim Coens announced the project during a visit to the town, where they helped lay a new, bike-friendly strip of stones.
The aim is to keep Damme’s famous cobbles while reducing the bumps for cyclists, especially at the busy junction of Kerkstraat and Oude Sluissedijk. Flat stones will be placed along the edges of the road, where cyclists usually ride, making the route safer and smoother.
Flanders' Heritage Agency says the trial could become a model for other historic town centres. The project costs 149,000 euros, with the Flemish government paying 60 per cent and the city of Damme covering the rest.
