Club YLA secure first ever trophy after penalty shootout
Football team Club YLA have won the Belgian Women's Cup, the first trophy in the club's history. The team, affiliated with Club Brugge, beat OH Leuven on penalties at Den Dreef on Wednesday.
Leuven were the favourites ahead of the match, as they were playing at home and are ranked higher in the Belgium Women's Super League. However, the underdogs won after a thrilling final.
After extra time, the evenly matched game stood at 1-1 and had to be decided on penalties. Club YLA kept their cool to score every penalty in the shootout, winning 4-2.
“This is the nicest feeling ever,” Club YLA forward Davinia Vanmechelen told Flemish public broadcaster VRT. “This is a dream I have cherished since I was three years old, I am so proud that I've been able to do this with this club. We showed Belgium that this club is doing well and that we will keep improving."
