Club Brugge bans 34 fans after Nazi salutes during match at Standard
Club Brugge will ban 34 supporters for making racist gestures during Sunday's match against Standard Liege. Club, the reigning league champions, are not waiting for the Belgian Football Association (KBVB) to rule before taking action.
On Monday, Club filed a case with the KBVB's Chamber of Civil Exclusion against 24 supporters. The club has since identified 10 more individuals and banned all 34 from attending home and away matches.
During the match on Sunday, a group of Club supporters gave the Kühnen salute, a variation of the Hitler salute, in response to an anti-racism initiative by the home team. Shortly before the match, around 300 youth players took to the field wearing white or red masks as a stand against racism. The Club supporters reacted negatively to this display. Similar behaviour was observed from Club fans during the Supercup match against Union Saint-Gilloise in July.
"Club continues to emphasise that there is no place for misconduct within the Blauw-Zwarte family and that it will continue to take proactive action against people who are not worthy of wearing our Club colours," the club said in a press release.
