Christina Scheppelmann named as general and artistic director of La Monnaie
German Christina Scheppelmann will succeed Peter de Caluwe as general and artistic director of the Royal Theatre La Monnaie. This was announced on Thursday.
Scheppelmann was among 24 candidates put forward by the theatre's board of directors. Foreign minister Lahbib appointed Scheppelmann to the prestigious position.
Philippe Delusinne, chair of the cultural institution's board of directors, said of Scheppelmann, "I am impressed by the clarity of her objectives and the coherence of her projects. She presents concrete ideas and has all the capacities to be an excellent general manager of the Royal Theatre of La Monnaie."
Born in Hamburg, Scheppelmann has held important positions in the artistic field in four countries on three continents. She is currently general manager of Seattle Opera and has worked in many theatres, including San Francisco, Barcelona and Oman. She is fluent in five languages and will take up her new role in July 2025.
De Caluwe has been general director since 2007 and will continue his responsibilities for programming until the end of 2025 during the transition to Scheppelmann's term.
