They also said the economic impact of the measures has not been properly assessed.

The organisations support the goals of restoring nature and protecting biodiversity but argue that the draft goes beyond what is required under the EU Nature Restoration Act. They say stricter protection rules could be extended far beyond existing Natura 2000 areas and affect cities, ports and other economic centres.

The groups also criticised the lack of a completed socio-economic impact study and said there has been insufficient consultation with citizens and civil society organisations.
<div id=\"bookmark-991932b9-e7be-45e9-8c7f-1f82cb4c9a68\"\n class=\"release-content-bookmark release-content-bookmark--horizontal\">\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__thumbnail\"\n href=\"http://prez.ly/GZ7d\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" style=\"background-image: url(https://prezly.imgix.net/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.uc.assets.prezly.com%2F1c1e60c8-5ef5-429a-8784-4ccabad31c20%2F-%2Fpreview%2F600x600%2F?ar=1%3A1&fit=crop&s=bdd0c9148065a77f4c52d454c1e5d469)\"\n >\n \n
\n\n <a class=\"release-content-bookmark__title\"\n href=\"http://prez.ly/GZ7d\"\n rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\n target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"bookmark\"\n data-track=\"Story WebBookmark Click\"\n data-placement=\"content\"\n data-id=\"991932b9-e7be-45e9-8c7f-1f82cb4c9a68\"\n >\n Biodiversity alliance calls on governments to act on nature restoration \n \n
\n The Belgian Biodiversity Alliance, a coalition of nature organisations, is calling on regional governments to submit an ambitious Nature...
\n \n <a href=\"https://www.belganewsagency.eu/\"\n target=\"_blank\"\n rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"\n class=\"release-content-bookmark__provider\"\n >\n \n belganewsagency.eu \n
\n
\n
They are calling for the process to be put on hold and for fresh talks with the European Commission before work on the plan continues.

The appeal comes just weeks after the Belgian Biodiversity Alliance handed a petition signed by more than 40,000 people to the Flemish government, demanding a more ambitious and legally binding nature restoration plan.
