Brussels turns blue for world premiere of new Smurfs film

Brussels was transformed into a Smurf village on Saturday as the world premiere of The Smurfs: The Film took over the Mont des Arts. The event coincided with World Smurf Day and drew several hundred fans to the gardens, where entertainment and large screens brought the celebration to life.
The screening took place at The Square, with around 700 invited Belgian and international guests, including director Chris Miller and stars James Corden, Dan Levy and Rihanna. Approximately 300 fans were admitted to a special fan zone near the blue carpet, while more gathered outside to watch on two large screens.
Visitors were treated to a festive atmosphere with Smurf hats, blueberries, face painting, photo booths, and a prize wheel offering themed giveaways. The Brussels Ballet Morane opened the event with a performance inspired by the film’s opening dance. Actors Levy and Corden appeared on the blue carpet, with Corden stopping to take selfies with fans.

Earlier in the day, Manneken Pis joined the festivities, donning a Smurf Without a Name costume during a traditional ceremony. Brussels mayor Philippe Close and Véronique Culliford, daughter of Smurf creator Peyo, were in attendance. “We are happy to remind people that Brussels is the home of The Smurfs,” said Close.
Culliford received an honorary diploma from the Order of the Friends of Manneken Pis. She noted that her mother, a costume designer, had once made an outfit for the statue in 1988 to mark the Smurfs’ 30th anniversary. Saturday’s costume was created by Sophie Wéry, who has designed Manneken Pis outfits for the past decade.

The Smurfs: The Film hits cinemas on 16 July and follows Smurfette and Smurf Without a Name on a mission to rescue Papa Smurf from Razamel and Gargamel.
