Brussels public transport reached over one million daily users in 2024

In 2024, Brussels’ public transport operator STIB-MIVB recorded more than one million daily passengers for the first time, marking a 7% increase in ridership compared to the previous year.
According to its newly released annual report, the company registered a total of 401.9 million journeys over the year, a strong signal of post-pandemic recovery and growing reliance on sustainable urban mobility. Despite ongoing construction works across the capital, STIB-MIVB vehicles covered an impressive 52.8 million kilometres over the course of the year.
Continued investment
The company has pledged continued investment in quality service, notably through the modernisation of its fleet. This includes the acquisition of new metro trains, trams, and electric buses to enhance reliability and environmental performance.
As of the end of 2024, 30 of the 43 newly ordered M7 metro trains are already operational, along with 30 out of 90 new-generation trams (TNG) and 15 of the 70 eCitaro electric buses. These upgrades form part of STIB-MIVB’s long-term strategy to transition towards a fully electric fleet while increasing capacity and passenger comfort.
High customer satisfaction
Customer satisfaction remains high, with nearly 80% of passengers rating the service at least 7 out of 10. Key drivers of satisfaction include improved comfort, punctuality, and service frequency. The operator’s contactless payment system also proved popular, with over 12 million tap-ins registered. By the end of 2024, contactless transactions accounted for 60% of all single-ticket purchases.
One of the year’s major successes was the launch of tram line 10, which now transports an average of 80,000 passengers daily. STIB-MIVB sees the expansion and upgrading of its metro, tram, and bus services as vital to meeting Brussels’ mobility and climate goals in the years ahead.
