Brussels prosecutor opens investigation into stabbing at pro-Palestine demonstration

A young man was left critically injured after being stabbed during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Brussels on Sunday evening. The Brussels public prosecutor's office announced on Monday that it had opened a judicial investigation into attempted manslaughter.

The incident occurred at around 18:15 on Sunday in the Rue de Laeken, near the Place du Samedi. Several hundred people were holding a demonstration against the war in Gaza and were en route to the Place de la Bourse, where a pro-Palestinian gathering takes place every evening.

One of the participants, a 22-year-old man, was stabbed in the Rue de Laeken. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but is no longer in danger of dying. According to VRT, the victim is from Gaza and the stabbing occurred without any prior discussion.

Suspect arrested

Following the incident, the police arrested a 21-year-old suspect and handed them over to the public prosecutor's office. The federal judicial police laboratory attended the scene to conduct an investigation. Footage from surveillance cameras in the area will also be analysed.

It is not yet clear whether the stabbing is related to the demonstration. In a statement on Sunday evening, the organisers of the demonstration said that the stabbing was carried out by someone not involved in the demonstration and was not linked to it.
